Abstract
This study aims to describe students' mathematical communication abilities as they solve open-ended mathematical questions. This research is quantitative descriptive analysis. The study subjects are eighth graders from SMP Negeri 13 Gresik in the 2023–2024 school year. The research method used in this study is the test method. The study found that 16 students had strong mathematics communication abilities, with an average percentage of 86.79%. Students that excel in solving open-ended problems via mathematical communication are able to meet all four indicators (IDK 1, IDK 2, IDK 3, IDK 4). With an average of 53%, 42 students have medium mathematics communication abilities. Students whose mathematical communication abilities are intermediate when it comes to handling open-ended problems may meet IDK 1, IDK 4, but they struggle with IDK 3, IDK 2. While 12 students (or 22% on average) lacked strong mathematical communication skills, those students performed worse at IDK 1, IDK 4, IDK 3, and not yet capable on IDK 2.
