Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of using picture cards on the reading skills of third-grade elementary school students. This study uses a quantitative experimental research design with a quasi-experimental design. Initial observations showed that students tended to be noisy, lacked focus when the teacher was explaining, and had low interest in reading. The main factors causing this were long and monotonous reading materials, as well as teachers who did not use learning media other than thematic textbooks. This condition made it difficult for students to understand essential information from the text. Therefore, this study tested the use of picture cards on the research sample. The population in this study were third-grade students at UPT SD Negeri 49 Gresik. The research sample consisted of two classes, namely class III B with 24 students as the experimental class that received treatment using picture cards and class III C with 24 students as the control class that did not receive special treatment. Data collection techniques were carried out through reading skill tests before and after treatment (pretest and posttest). Data analysis using the independent sample T-test showed a sig value (2-tailed) ≤ 0.05, namely 0.000, which means that there was a significant difference between the experimental class and the control class. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that the use of picture cards can be said to have an effect on the reading comprehension skills of students in grade III of elementary school.
