Abstract
Writing is a process for making good paragraphs which is transformed from the thoughts or ideas. In the level of university, the students should write a research aimed to require the last assignment called thesis. Thesis is a research paper which is submitted to fulfill one of the requirements to get the bachelor degree and also give the contribution for certain field of knowledge. Methodology is the important part in students’ thesis because it explains the information how the research was conducted. When starting to write a thesis, it is beneficial to define the methods of work that would be used both in the theoretical and practical part. Students will be able to write a good and accurate research if they understand the concept or design of their research used. The concept of their research should be explained clearly and also related to the variables which make understanding for the reader. Thus, the research questions in this study are : (1) What are the problems that the students have in formulating research design ? (2) What are the problems that the students have in formulating data collection procedure? (3) What are the problems that the students have in formulating data analysis ? This study was descriptive qualitative research. The researcher described and analyzed the students’ formulation in writing methodology especially research design, data collection procedure, and data analysis. The source of the data in this study is from reviewing and analyzing students’ thesis script in English Language Education Department at University of Muhammadiyah Gresik of the graduation students in the year 2015. Moreover, the researcher used documentation as a tool in collecting data. The researcher analyzed 3 student’s thesis scripts in the the year 2015. From the result of this study, were; most of the students have the same problems in writing research design, data collection procedure, and data analysis. In formulating research design, most of the students did not have any problem. They have formulated their research design well. In formulating data collection procedure, the students sometimes start the first step by asking permission to the school for observation. Actually, that is not part of research procedure but that is a process of doing research. In line with research design, the students also have problem in constructing data analysis. Mostly, the students still explained the general term of the data and also the students did not code the data. However, coding is important in qualitative data analysis
