Abstract
This study was conducted based on the consideration of the problems that the students had in listening ability in the eighth grade at SMP YPI Nasrul Umam Duduksampeyan Gresik. The researcher found that students‟ listening ability was very low. Based on the preliminary study, the fact that the average score obtained from the pre test was 18,52 and the passing grade ( KKM ) for English lesson was 70. It means that, the students could not achieve the minimum standard of the score. Their listening skill was not good. It could be seen from how they listened to the conversation from the teacher or the audio, they could not listen for limited times but in many times. In this study, the researcher dealt with the implementation of dictogloss technique to improve students‟ listening ability. The subject in this study was the eighth grade students of SMP YPI Nasrul Umam. This study was to investigate “how does dictogloss technique improve the eighth grade students‟ listening ability and students‟ motivation during the classroom teaching and learning”. The design of the study is classroom action research. The researcher played two roles in this research; as a teacher and researcher. During implementing dictogloss technique in the classroom, the researcher was accompanied by a teacher partner. This research was conducted in one cycle which divided into four main activities; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The reflection based on the findings during the observation and compared with the criteria of success including; (1) students‟ average score is 70 (passing grade for English lesson), and (2) students can participate actively in the class. The research findings showed that this technique was effective to teach English especially in listening ability at the eighth grade of SMP YPI Nasrul Umam. It was indicated on the students‟ average score of post test in cycle 1. The students‟ average score in pre test from the teacher and teacher partner was 18,52. The scores improved in post test. The students‟ average score in post test from the teacher and teacher partner was 79,6. The improvement was also shown in the students‟ performances in the class. In the first meeting, the percentage of the students‟ performances was 60,7%. It increased in the second meeting, 66,1%. The third meeting was 76,8% and increased significantly in the fourth meeting was 83,9%. Based on the research findings, three suggestions are provided. The first, the English teachers are recommended that dictogloss technique was an effective technique to teach listening to the students. The second, the school should provide the facilities that support teaching technique using audio. The last, the next researchers who want to conduct a research using dictogloss technique are recommended to conduct this research in the other language features, students‟ levels, and language skill.
