Abstract
This study was conducted based on the consderation of problems that the students had in learning vocabulary English at SDN Karangrejo Manyar Gresik. The researcher found that strudents’s vocabulary was low especially using vocabulary in context. Based on the preliminary study, the fact that average score obtained from the pre test was only 11% students could pass the criterion of success which got score minimal score 65. It means that the students could not achieve the minimum standard of the school target. It was also found that the students still got difficult to focus on the lesson. Based on the problems that the researcher faced in the classroom, this study focused on solving the problem related how the students can focus on the lesson and enjoy the teaching and learning well in order they can enhance their vocabulary. This study proposed Gouin series to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery. The research problem here is, “How does Gouin series enhance the students’ English vocabulary mastery at SDN Karangrejo Manyar Gresik ?” The design of the study is classroom action research. During implementing Gouin series in the classroom, the researcher was accompanied by a teacher partner to observe the class. This research was conducted in one cycle with four meeting of action which is divided into four main activities; planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The reflection based on the findings during the observation and compared with the criteria of success including (1) 80% students can pass the test well, with the minimal score is 65, and (2) 80% students condition are active which better than before the action research is implemented. The research findings showed that Gouin series was effective strategy to teach vocabulary at SDN Karangrejo Manyar Gresik. It was indicated on the students’ score of post test in cycle I. The students’s average result in pre test was 11% students could pass the test well. The score improved in post test. The students average result in post test was 100% students could pass the test well. The improvement was also shown in the students’s performances in the class. It can be showed that the class performance improved or more active each day from the first meeting to fourth meeting. Based on the research findings, two suggestions are provided. The first, the English teacher are recommended that Gouin series was a good strategy to teach English vocabulary for young learner. The second, the next researcher who want to conduct a research using Gouin series are recommended to conduct this research in different areas, levels, and skills.
