Abstract
In 2004 Indonesian government is trying to develope new curriculum in which English subject is not only local content but also compulsory subject, starting from the forth grade up to the sixth grade in elementary school. That program is called Competence Based Curriculum. The purpose of this program is to develop students’ understanding about the relationship between language and culture. Moreover, it purposes do develop students’ ability in communication in oral and written form (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) (Curriculum 2004). Learning grammar is not easy for Indonesian learners who study English, especially for elementary school students who have new experience in learning grammar. The fact they seem to understand when the teacher explains about grammar in the classroom, but when they have to apply it both written of spoken English, they are not able to use it properly. In fact, the student’s grammar mastery in the fifth grade students of MI Modern Sunan Giri Gresik are low. This is because there are many aspects of grammar such as simple words, tenses and meaning that are totally different from their mother tongue. To solve the problem, the researcher attempted to use pictures in teaching grammar, in this case is English Positive Degree subject. The purpose of conducting this reseach is to prove that there is effectiveness of using pictures in teaching English Positive Degree. By reviewing related theories, the reseacher can assume hypothesis that there is effectiveness of using pictures in teaching English Positive Degree at the fifth grade of MI Modern Sunan Giri Gresik. In order to know the effectiveness of using pictures and to know the difference result, the researcher took 46 students as the sample. The students of Va are classified into experimental group and the class Vb are classified into control group. Each group consists of 23 students. They are treated differently, especially in teaching technique. Finally, The researcher foud; the result of t-test is 5,7 while the result of ttable with degree of freedom n1+n2-2=44 is 2,021, it means that there is significant effect of using pictures in teaching English Positive Degree. Moreover the reseacher found the statistic average of Experimental group (x1) is 11,3 while the statistic average of Control Group (x2) is 0,7, it means that the students whose teacher uses pictures have better English Positive Degree mastery than the students whose teacher does not use pictures.
