Abstract
This study entitled “Developing English Material in the Form of Digital Comic Using Schoology for Seventh Grade students at SMP Islamic Qon, Gresik” was aimed to find out the target and learning needs of Grade VII students of SMP Islamic Qon, Gresik. Moreover, it had a goal that was to develop appropriate English materials as supporting media to motivate students in learning English and solve their time limit during classroom teaching and learning. The design of the study was Research and Development (R&D) study. The development model used in this research was ADDIE Model which has a) analysis, b) design, c) development, d) implementation, e) evaluation procedure. The researcher’s product was in the form of digital comic. The subjects of this research were students of Grade VII of SMP Islamic Qon, Gresik. The needs analysis data were collected by using questionnaires and an interview. Then, the results of questionnaires were calculated through percentage. Thus, the highest percentage was considered as the needs of students. Meanwhile, the results of expert judgment were analyzed in the form of descriptive statistics. Four units of materials were developed in this research. Each unit consists of introduction, main lesson and reinforcement. The material used digital comic as an input text. The units covered some activities such as answering question, filling the blank, matching text and pictures, and completing texts. The themes used represented students’ daily life. According to the results of the expert judgment, the material was very good based on a mean score of 3.5. Based on the result study of development, the students are interested learning English using English materials in the form of digital comic, because the comic’s pictures and audio help them to understand and to comprehend the subject matters easily. They can interact with their classmates and teacher anytime using Schoology. In conclusion, the material was appropriate to be used in Grade VII of SMP Islamic Qon. The researcher hopes that there will be more teachers, readers and developers who look at this study and could be developed more with different kind like experimentally and analysis.
