Abstract

Cohesion was a grammatical system within a text that holds a text together, and gave it meaning. It was important to contact one sentence to another. This study was about the analysis of cohesive devices in comparative and contrast essay used by the Third Semester Students of English Language Education Department of University of Muhammadiyah Gresik in the Academic Year of 2015/2016”. There were two objectives in this research, namely: to find out the types of cohesive devices used in the comparative and contrast essays and to find out the causes of students in using cohesive devices. The design of this particular study was descriptive qualitative research, especially discourses analysis; qualitative was used to describe in detail about the analysis of the cohesive devices found in the comparative and contrast essays. Descriptive study in textual analysis was applied in this study to analyze five classification essays written by the third semester students of English Language education Departement in University Of Muhammadiyah Gresik. Twenty essays had been collected and evaluated based on Halliday and Hassan (1976) theory; in the term of cohesive devices; reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion. The result finding of this study showed that the students used three types of cohesive devices which the grammatical cohesive devises among sentences were dominated by reference (personal, demonstrative and comparative), conjunction (additive, adversative, causal, temporal) and lexical cohesion (reiteration). Then the result of the study indicated that students had medium ability in using cohesive devices. They misunderstood about the term of cohesive devices both in grammatical or writing class. They noticed cohesive devices as part of conjunction. Though, conjunction was one part of cohesive devices. The writer suggested that English learners should learn more about how cohesive devices were used correctly and effectively. Besides, the use of cohesion also has to be the emphasis in teaching writing and for the lecturer. They should give more attention in teaching cohesive devices in writing class and also can use this study as the enrichment in Discourse Analysis material.
