Abstract
This study describes about the use of STAD in teaching reading for the seventh grade student at SMP Islam Manbaul Ulum Giri. The researcher chooses SMP Islam Manbaul Ulum Giri as the school for being observed because it becomes this school has applied STAD technique in the teaching of reading. SMP Islam Manbaul Ulum Giri was built in 2004. The appropriate method of the teaching and learning was very important to help students master the reading skills. This study proposes an alternative method to teach students to read by using STAD, in which reading process is to get information in reading text. In STAD, the students work together in groups, aid each other in understanding reading text. This study is to describe the process of the STAD technique, the problems that occur during teaching reading using STAD technique, and the students’ responses of teaching reading using STAD technique and to produce the theory related to the use of STAD technique in teaching reading. The study was done on l7th, 22nd and 24nd of March 2011. In this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative. The tools that were used to collect the data in this research were observation, interview, and questionnaire. Based on the result, the teacher used STAD technique in teaching reading by dividing the students into groups, explaining the task and the procedure, explaining individual and group scoring, delivering the lesson, giving evaluation and conclusion, giving individual quiz, counting the students improvement score. The implementation of STAD technique in teaching reading by an English teacher of the 7m B grade students at SMP Islam Manbaul Ulum Giri was quite effective because she implemented STAD technique by using seven steps in implementing STAD technique in the classroom as Slavin (2000) in review of related literature. The data horn students’ responses showed that student had a positive response to STAD technique in teaching reading comprehension at SMP Islam Manbaul Ulum Giri. The conclusion of this thesis is an English teacher of seventh grade at SMP Islam Manbaul Ulum Giri uses STAD technique in teaching reading by using seven steps teaching techniques. It could be proved by the result of instruments. The writer also wanted to give suggestion for further writer. Because the result of this study can not be generalized to other junior high school, it will be better if this study is continued in the future to see the different of the implementation of STAD technique in teaching reading.
