Abstract

This research was to focus on the use of Discussion Method in teaching News Item text at tenth grade students of Senior High School. News item is a text that informs the readers about newsworthy or important events of the day. The discussion is one way to promote a conductive learning in the classroom. Discussion method is suitable for many situations and can give opportunity to students to express their ideas or opinions orally toward the following issues. Research design of this study is Qualitative Research. Researcher found that the implementation activities of the discussion method is divided into 6 steps, such as; (1) presenting the problem, issue, or case, (2) guiding students for discussion in group, (3) discussion activity, (4) reporting the result of discussion, and (5) giving feedback related to the result, (6) writing down and submitting the result of discussion. In practice, the implementation of discussion method for teaching news item text requires more time and preparation both in terms of material procurement or implementation of the activity itself. Finally, researcher will give some recommendation for other researchers. Research related to the implementation of discussion method to improve others language skill is also needed. Moreover, conducting research on teachers' thinking about discussion is also needed. It is because of the impact teachers have on instruction and students. Moreover, the teacher plays a powerful role in determining what, and how, the subject matter is taught. Understanding teachers 'thinking about the discussion is a needed step in discussion of research if we assume that teachers' thoughts underlie their classroom action.
