Abstract
English Vocabulary mastery is how the students in the third grade understand about English words meaning. According to Graves (1986), ideal vocabulary that the beginner level should be understood is about 2500 until 5000 vocabularies. However, this is less possessed by the learners of English in our country, especially English as the foreign language. So, the use of language only to know things and places. In third grade of SDN Cerme Lor, the English teacher as the researcher finds problem about English vocabulary mastery. They have difficulties in understanding English vocabulary mastery. They look crowded when the teacher teach them about English vocabulary mastery. Students in the third grade still like playing, so they need activity which can make them move their body. Based on Anastasia (1998:63) in Make a Match strategy, it has correlation with students who likes playing. In the activity, all students will be more active to study and will move because they should find their pair card each other. Based on the problems that the researcher faced in the classroom, the problem is, “How does Make a Match strategy improve students’ vocabulary mastery at third grade of Elementary school in SDN Cerme Lor?” The design of this research is classroom action research. The researcher played two roles in this research; as a teacher and researcher. During implementing mind mapping strategy in the classroom, the researcher was accompanied by a teacher partner. This research was conducted in one cycle which divided into four main activities; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The reflection based on the findings during the observation and compared with the criteria of success including; (1) students’ average score is 65 (passing grade for English lesson), (2) More than 50% students get score above the SKM and (3) students can participate actively in the class. The research findings showed that this strategy was effective to teach English vocabulary mastery at third grade in SDN Cerme lor. It was indicated on the students’ average score in cycle 1. The average score of book score is 66,38 to 79,28. Moreover, the improvement was also shown in the students’ performances in the class. From the first meeting to third meeting, there are significant improving which happened in the class, about their behavior and their activeness. Based on the research findings, two suggestions are provided. The first, the English teachers are recommended that Make A Match strategy was a good strategy to teach English vocabulary mastery to the students. The second, the next researcher suggests finding another variation or modification of this technique in order to get more variations or enrich variation of this technique. And also, next researcher has to arrange time allotment well.
