Abstract

In this study, the researcher found the characteristic of the eighth grade students of Muhammadiyah 1 Junior High School in Gresik. In which, most of them always find difficulties to comprehend the text of reading such as recount text. They also said that English lesson is not interesting. It because there is no variety of activity that the students do in teaching and learning process so that the often feel bored. Not only that, the English teacher did not use an interesting media such as colorful pictures to increase the students reading skill. Those problem became the reason of the researcher to conduct research development. The goal of this research is to develop the reading material by using story-based lesson. In this research and development, there are some steps to develop storybook as the primary tool of English reading material such as: need analysis, design instruction, development material, expert validation, development of validation, try out material, revision, and final product. Need analysis has been done by conducting questionnaire toward the students , interview with the English teacher, and interview with the experts. After analysing the student’s needs, the writer designed storybook based on the student’s need and lesson which is appropriate with the syllabus in that school. After that, the researcher made some lesson plans that refers to the syllabus. In which, there are four lesson plans which are one lesson plan is for one unit. There are four unit in this study, in which each unit have different theme. After developing storybook as the final product, the researcher gave it to the experts in order to be evaluated and validated. The researcher chose two experts to check the storybook. After giving that storybook to the experts, the researcher should revised and developed it. Then, the researcher conducted try out to the 28 of the eighth grade students of Muhammadiayh 1 Junior High School in Gresik. The final product of this study is the material of reading in the form of written book, that is storybook. The content of the materials are the story in the form of recount text.
