Abstract

Academic self concept is students’ views toward his/her academic ability which cover what students feel, think, and react in overall subjects generally or only certain subject. Academic self concept in this study only focuses on English subject. Meanwhile, English achievement is the measurement to reach successful in English teaching and learning which includes all of competences and general skill (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) which are examined in the term of both oral and written test, while in the last session will be given a score using number as the symbol. Moreover, academic self concept is one of significant predictors of English achievement. Here, the researcher wants to know whether there is correlation between students’ academic self concept and English achievement or not. So, the researcher gives the questionnaire to the students. That is why, this study to find the correlation between students’ academic self concept and English achievement is needed to answer this phenomenon. This is quantitative study which is needed in correlational study. 30 students of 8th D grade of MTs Masyhudiyah are the sample of this study. The data was collected by using academic self concept questionnaire and English achievement scores. The questionnaire was used to get the answer of students’ academic self concept. After getting the data, the researcher analyzed the data by using statistical computation of SPSS 15.00 and used spearman’s rho correlation. The researcher’s finding from the computation of data showed that there was positive and strong correlation between academic self concept and English achievement (r=0.558). Furthermore, the p-value was 0.001. That is why the null hypothesis (H0) can be rejected. It means there was significance correlation between academic self concept and English achievement at 8th D grade of MTs Masyhudiyah Giri. Finally, it can be concluded that there was positively, strongly, and significantly correlation between academic self concept and English achievement. Therefore, it suggested for conducting studies which aim to find best way how to make students’ academic self concept higher in order to increase the students’ English achievement. Then for the teacher, s/he may motivate and propose good learning activities in order to enhance students’ academic self concept and English achievement
