Abstract

In Indonesia, English is a Foreign Language that must be mastered by students from Elementary up to University. Therefore, English is very important needed neither communication nor education, especially in Junior High school to prepare and succeed the graduates in the next level of education. The students have difficulties to express their idea orally in the speaking class. So the teacher should know the students learning style at first to solve the problems in speaking activity Here, mind mapping strategy can be used as one way to teach speaking. This study is conducted to answer the research questions related to the implementation of mind mapping strategy in teaching speaking. The question is how is the implementation of mind mapping strategy to teach speaking to the eighth grader of SMP YIMI “Full Day School” Gresik. The subject of the study is the teacher of SMP YIMI “Full Day School” Gresik. There are twenty students. The data was collected by doing observation technique and interview technique. In order to answer the research question, the writer used descriptive qualitative. There are no significant differences in implementing the strategy. Based on the theory, there are seven steps or procedure in making mind mapping. Compare with the theory, the teacher added the steps in doing mind mapping by combining some steps, such as give some cards to choose the student’s performance and give some games and joke to make a good atmosphere in the class. Game and joke does not support the mind mapping itself as Buzan stated in the theory of doing mind mapping, but it will be useful to create a good situation during teaching and learning process. The researcher concluded that the result of the observation and depth interview with the teacher, the students can discuss with their group member. They can share their ideas with their friends and teacher, it will be easier for students to do their job that eventually students will present the results of their work individually that is make a monologue based mind mapping strategy. The strategy of mind mapping is very useful for both the teacher and the students. For the next researcher will be expected to conduct the research in another skill of teaching English.
