Abstract

Speaking is one of activities that people used to communicate with other people. When people speaks, they can interact their language to express their ideas, feeling, and thought in the conversation. Based on the previous study, the previous researcher used Drama Technique in teaching speaking and their aims to know students speaking ability. The finding of the study shown that 83,33% students was success but 16,66% students does not success in speaking. Speaking aspects was still lowest in their research is fluency, it is because the time were given by the teacher is limited. As we know that fluency is key of success in speaking. So that the researcher wants to prove students improvement in speaking fluency by using drama technique. The way to make students speaking fluency, the researcher gave enough time to practice their drama before they perform it. This study was designed to investigate the significant effect of Drama Technique on students speaking ability. The design of this study is quasi experimental design. The researcher choose the sample of this study by using cluster sampling. There are 32 students of 8A as experimental group and 32 students of 8B as control group. The data was collected by using pre test and post test. After getting the data, the researcher analyzed the data by using SPSS 16.0 program and used Independent Sample t-test. The research finding showed that there was a significant difference between experimental group who was taught by using Drama Technique and control group was taught by using Pair Work Technique. It has proven by the result of Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.002 in critical value for 5% level. It means that the significance value was less than 5% or (0.05>0,002). So the null hypothesis could be rejected. It can be concluded that there is enough evidence to state that the use of Drama Technique is better than Pair Work Technique on students speaking ability at Eight grade of SMPN 2 Cerme. Therefore the researcher wants to suggest to English teacher to use Drama Technique for implementing of students speaking ability as an alternative technique in English teaching. The researcher also suggest for the future researcher to use Drama Technique to teach their students in the future.
