Abstract

Mathematical critical thinking ability is an essential 21st-century skill that students need to solve problems logically, systematically, and reflectively, and it is influenced by self efficacy, which refers to an individual’s belief in their own abilities. This study aims to describe students’ mathematical critical thinking abilities based on high, medium, and low self efficacy levels in the topic of Three-Variable Linear Equation Systems (SPLTV). This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach and was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Dukun, Gresik Regency. The research subjects were selected using purposive sampling based on self efficacy questionnaire results, consisting of three eleventh-grade students representing each self efficacy category. Data were collected through self efficacy questionnaires, mathematical critical thinking tests, and semi-structured interviews. Data analysis was carried out using the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that students with high self efficacy demonstrate strong mathematical critical thinking abilities across all Facione indicators, students with moderate self efficacy show fairly good abilities with some limitations, while students with low self efficacy experience difficulties in identifying problems and drawing appropriate conclusions. These findings indicate that self efficacy influences variations in students’ mathematical critical thinking abilities.
