Abstract

Translation plays an important role in academic context. It helps the students in making the basic connections between the source language and the target language and helps the students to understand better the text of one language to other language. Translation also plays a key role in exchanging information between languages. This thesis focuses on translation methods analysis that the students’ use in translating two abstract text of English journal and knowing students’ reason why they used that method. This research was mix method research, quantitative and qualitative research. The subjects were 15 sixth semester students of English Education who passed in Translation subject in fifth semester. Data collection was done by giving a test to all participants in this reseach and interviewing the students who got high score in test. After analyzing the data, the researcher got the result if there were 4 methods that most students used, out of 8 methods they were formulated by Newmark. They were communicative translation, semantic translation, idiomatic translation and faithful translation. Students’ common reasons in translating using communicative method which students who applied communicative translation got the highest score were the easy of the method itself and suitability. Around 40% students’ reason in choosing translation method was the easy of the method, while 15% students’ reason in choosing translation method is suitability. From the result of this research, the lecturers are suggested to keep on trying to make an effort in improving students’ translation skill especially in translating any kind of abstract research of English journal. For the students especially in English Education, the students are suggested to find out best method in translating this kind of the text so they can minimize time in translating abstract text of research and can understand well about the content of it.
