Abstract

Writing is one of the important skills in English, because people need to learn writing in English for business or academic purpose. People can express their ideas, feeling, opinion, and able to communicate with other people by writing. The way to master an international language well is by writing and practicing it. The purpose of this study is to find out the significant influence of SWELL (Social-Interactive Writing for English Language Learners) in writing for the eighth grade students of MTs. Islahiyah Kalitidu. The design of this study is quasi experiment with non-randomized pre-test and post-test. In order to know the effect of SWELL, the researcher carried out the experiment at Mts. Islahiyah Kalitidu from August 4th 2014 to August 16th 2014. The researcher took 52 students as the sample. The researcher took the sample by using clustering sample, because the researcher only took some classes not all classes. The class of VIII-1 consists of 26 students as a control group and class of VIII-3 students as an experimental group. The instrument was writing test to get score of students writing mastery. After pre-test was given, the treatment was conducted in four meetings, then the researcher held post-test to get research data. After getting the research data, the researcher analyzed the data by SPSS 16.0 program. Based on the result of data analyses, the research finding showed that there was a significant difference between students writing mastery who was taught by SWELL method and students who was taught without SWELL method. The value of significant level was 0.000 under 0.05 level of significance. Based on the research findings, it could be concluded that SWELL method had significant influence in writing Descriptive text at eighth grade students of MTs. Islahiyah Kalitidu. Based on this research, the researcher gives some suggestions. Firstly, the English teacher should increase frequency of using SWELL method in teaching writing to improve the students writing ability. Secondly, the students should do more exercise with SWELL method. The last, the researcher suggests the next researcher to do research about SWELL method in different type of text and different level. The researcher hopes that this study can hold up the previous study and may be used as consideration for teaching and learning process.
