Abstract
Plagiarism becomes a problem in education as the increasing of electronic development through internet. Many studies about plagiarism were conducted, but there are still limited studies which describe how the real evidence about models of plagiarism done in students’ thesis are. Most of the previous study report that there are many cases of plagiarism by students, but its do not give the evidence which describe how models of plagiarism done, moreover in Indonesia, there is still limited study about plagiarism in education. Thus, the purpose of this study is to find the models of Plagiarism found in students’ thesis, especially in English Language Education Department at Muhammadiyah University of Gresik. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative. This study uses document review by reviewing the latest English students’ thesis in year 2013, using snowball sampling. One by one, 13 thesis have been selected and reviewed. The thesis have been reviewed using internet software and classified based on types and model of plagiarism done by students. This study finds three types of plagiarism, they are copy paste plagiarism, summarize plagiarism and word switch plagiarism. Copy paste plagiarism are found about 70% and the form of copy paste plagiarism are copy paste sentences or paragraphs exactly same with the source without omitting any words, with omitting some words, and changing the format of the writing. Summarize plagiarism are found about 18% and the forms are summarize a paragraph and more than one paragraphs or sources become only one short paragraph. The last is word switch plagiarism which is only found about 12%. The conclusion is the writer found three models of plagiarism, they are copy paste plagiarism, summarize plagiarism and word switch plagiarism. Copy paste plagiarism is the most type of plagiarism done by students, here students just took too many sentences or even paragraphs from the sources without any significant changing even with or without state the reference. Then in summarize and word switch plagiarism the students do not state the reference, so it is indicated that they try to deceive someone else’ words as their own. For suggestions, the writer suggests for the students to gain knowledge about writing methodology and skill in writing thesis. For the advisors, they have to be more critical in checking students’ thesis, it is better if they can use plagiarism detector. For further researcher, maybe they can conduct a study for more types of plagiarism in a wide range of subjects.
