Abstract

In the process of teaching and learning English, learners' ability in mastering the four basic language skills becomes an important goal. Language skills include listening, speaking, reading and writing. However, reading should be emphasized first because the abilities to read and comprehend assist writing and speaking abilities (Bao, 2004). Most of the young learners have difficulty in reading. They cannot understand a text that they read. Indeed, comprehending a text is not easy for young learners. That is because young learners are rarely encouraged to read, and they also seldom have opportunities to read. They cannot really know how they comprehend the meaning of a text because of the lack of practice, lack of attention from the teacher, lack of motivation in the classroom, and the use of inappropriate strategies in the teaching of reading. So, teachers must do everything possible to make children’s reading experience successful. In this case, the researcher interests to test the effect of using text-based task on reading comprehension towards young learners in SDN Tambak Beras. In this study, the researcher chose the sixth grade students of SDN Tambak Beras as subject. The data was collected by using test as the instrument. There are two tests that are used by the researcher, those are pre-test and post-test. Before conducting pre-test and post-test, try out was done by the researcher. The purpose of try out is to know whether the reliability and validity are good or not. Try out was done to the other students that are not included in this research. The researcher conducted try out to sixth grade in SDN Banjar Sari. After gaining the data, the researcher analyzed the data by using SPSS 16.00. The research finding from the computation of the data showed that there is significant effect on using text-based task on reading comprehension towards young learners at sixth grade in SDN Tambak Beras. The researcher found that the significance value of sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000, it means that the significance value is less than 0.05. So, null hypothesis can be rejected. It means that there is significant effect on using text-based task on reading comprehension towards young learners at sixth grade in SDN Tambak Beras. In addition, the result of the research can be seen in students’ score improvement. Where, the mean of pre-test is 48.33 and the mean of post-test is 67.08. It means that text-based task can be proved to increase the students’ score.
