Abstract

Writing is a skill that is difficult to master in learning English. However, there was a way used by teachers in teaching writing. It was a folktale movie. Teachers used the media in teaching narrative writing. It could increase the students' writing score. There were two schools that successfully apply the media in teaching narrative writing. Those schools were MTsN Gresik and SMPM 4 Giri. The researcher intended to conduct research on how to teach narrative writing using folktale movie and how the students' response to the learning. There were two statements of problem in this study: (1) How is folktale movie used to teach narrative writing for the eighth grade students of MTsN Gresik and SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Giri? (2) How are the students' perceptions of those classes toward the use of folktale movie in the teaching narrative writing? Thus the objectives of the study were to describe the use of media in the teaching and learning process and the students' perception towards it. This study used descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects of this study were two English Teachers. They were Mr. Abdul Aziz and Mr.Mahbub Junaidi. Actually, the researcher took the data twice and the instrument of the study was the researcher herself by using tools of recording observation, questionnaire, and interview form. The researcher analyzed the data by using three steps. Those are data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The finding showed that in Pre-viewing teacher prepared the students to watch the video by taping their background knowledge, stimulating interest in the topic, and lessening their fear of unfamiliar vocabulary. In the Viewing the teacher played the video and made sure that the students understand the story well. In the last stage the teacher asked the students to write narrative text and discussed the students' writing result. The finding of the questionnaire showed that the students of those schools have positive perception to watch folktale movie in learning narrative writing.
