Abstract

The purpose of writing is to express any ideas to show information for readers. Therefore, English teacher must be creative in developing their teaching learning process to create good atmosphere, improve student’s writing skill, and make the teaching and learning writing more exciting. In this case, using appropriate teaching media is very important in teaching writing in order that the students can produce good writing and one of them is picture series. Thus the researcher is interested in investigating Picture series as the media of teaching writing that is applied in some Junior high schools in Gresik. This research will conduct at two junior high school between SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Giri and SMP Islamic Qon at eight grade. Researcher collects the data by doing observation and questioner in both school. The data is processed by doing reduction, data display, and conclusion. Based on the observation, The result finding of this research has found that there is still of writing aspect which can not be covered by applying picture series in the classroom and The questionnaires showed that most of the students liked Picture Series in the writing class. It meant that students’ responses to Picture Series which is applied by the teacher were very positive responses. The students were enthusiastic and enjoyed in writing class through Picture Series. Even has the positive impact, picture series has also the weakness such as 1). Most of the students were difficult to understand in make paragraph. 2). any sentence which is written by students did not connect with the others. 3). the students were noisy so that they did not focus on the teacher’s explanation, but teacher can reduce the weakness by doing such as 1).before implementing Picture Series the teacher decided the grammar which would be used so that the students would focus on one of the tense or grammar that is explained by the teacher before. 2). the teacher asked the students to write key word first one by one in order that the sentence which is written could connect with the others. 3). the teacher called the student’s name, gave a signal, asked the students to keep silent in a strong voice and did interactions such as conducted vocabularies game.
