Abstract

Reading is a cognitive skill that the students must comprehend all the contents and also the information of the text clearly. Many students consider that to comprehend reading text is not easy, especially when readers are dealing with new vocabularies and structures which they have not mastered yet. In addition, many teachers used unappropiate strategy and traditional method in teaching reading comprhension that make the students bored and unmotivated in the class. One of reading comprehension strategies is Inside-Outside Circle (IOC) Method. This strategy can help the students in improving their reading comprhension well. This study is aimed to investigate the significant effect of Inside-Outside Circle (IOC) Method to the students’ reading comprehension. This study was conducted in SMA Nusantara Balongpanggang. The design of this study was quasi experimental design. The population of this study was the eleventh grade of SMA Nusantara Balongpanggang. The researcher used cluster random sampling to get the sample of the study. It was divided into 18 students of XI Science as experimental group and 17 students of XI Social as control group. The data was collected from pre-test and post-test about reading narrative text. Before the instruments were used, the tryout was done to know the validity and reliability of instrument. After getting the data, the researcher analyzed the data by using SPSS 16.0 program. The research findings showed that there was a significant difference between experimental group and control group. It was proven by the result of the sig. (2-tailed) is 0.003. The sig. (2-tailed) is lower than 0.05 (0.003< 0.05), so the null hypothesis (H0) can be rejected. It means that Inside-Outside Circle Method significantly affect on students’ reading comprehension. The researcher concluded that Inside-Outside Circle (IOC) Method has a positive effect to the students’ reading comprehension. The students were motivated in learning reading comprehension and they understood the content and generic structure of narrative text. The researcher suggest to the English teacher for implementing Inside-Outside Circle (IOC) as an alternative strategy in teaching reading. Furthermore, the students must be confident in the classroom and they should exercise regularly to improve their English reading skill. The researcher hopes that further research can use this strategy in other of skill, different of text, and other any level.
