Abstract

This research took place based on English learning in SMP Muhammadiyah 7 Cerme shows the difficulty level students in writing a particular text narrative. Students are not only required to write well but also is required to understand the content of a text. Meanwhile, the teaching of writing is considered very important because teachers must help students to understand a text. Therefore researchers doing research on cooperative learning type jigsaw on the ability to write the narrative. This research design is experimental. This research aims to find out how significant influence to improve the understanding of writing by using cooperative learning type jigsaw. Researchers take 60 students as data sample in this research. Researchers divided the two groups, class VIII–A as experimental group consisted of 30 students, and class VIII-B as the control group consisted of 30 students. The data is taken from the initial tests and tests of the end. After getting the data, researchers analyze the results using SPSS 16.0. The results showed that this strategy is effective for teaching the understanding of writing for eight grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 7 Cerme. The average students in initial tests between the experimental and the control group was 52.03 and 33.4. the score increases on the final results of the test. The average students in the final results of tests between the experimental and the control group was 75.20 and 69.36. Based on the results of the hypothesis, there is a significant difference between the groups of experiments. Based on the findings of the research, it can be concluded that the type of cooperative learning, jigsaw can improve student writing pemahan. Cooperative learning type jigsaw have an advantage; responsibility of learning to the students, improve the understanding of material students deeper. This is evident from the results of the test showed that the score of students increased to achieve a passing grade. The study also provides three suggestions for teachers, students and other researchers. First, teachers are advised to increase the frequency of using cooperative learning, jigsaw type to avoid monotonous activities in teaching and learning English and to improve writing skills of students. Second, students are expected to concentrate on the process and motivated learn and improve their skills in writing. Third, For the next researcher, it is advisable to conduct research related to cooperative learning type jigsaw and can be applied in teaching other abilities as well.
