Abstract

Speaking skill is the most important skill that should be mastered by English learner. But sometimes, students get the difficulties in learning English, especially in speaking. It is possible because of the teaching learning system is needed to be changed. For example is in SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Giri, based on the observation in the class, the students have low capacity of speaking, the class atmosphere is not good and teacher method is traditional, that is why they need some innovation in learning process. One of the innovations is using Cooperative Learning Method while teaching. There are many techniques, included: Three Steps Interview, Think Pair Share, Talking Chips, Round Robin, Inside or Out Circle, Numbered Head Together, Jigsaw. In this research, the researcher used Cooperative Learning Method, especially Number heads together and three steps interview technique to improve students’ speaking skill. This research used Classroom Action Research design with four steps in a cycle, those are: Planning, Action, Observation, and Reflection. The data was taken in 5 meetings, with conducting pre and post test in the 1st and the 5th meetings. The result showed that there was significant different of students’ speaking mastery which was shown by increasing the scores comparing pre test scores and post test scores. That is why this research only used a cycle without continuing in the cycle 2. In the discussion, the data showed that some innovation in technique used while teaching speaking is needed to increase students’ motivation and capabilities. Besides, this research also motivated the teacher to use another method that would increase class atmosphere and students’ skills.
