Abstract

Intercultural Awareness plays an important role for foreign language learners to promote intercultural communication competencies. It helps the students to understand foreign cultures from other languages and have ability to use words and expressions more skillfully and authentically. It also helps students to more understand the appropriate level of language and situation so that can act naturally with people from other cultures, while recognizing and accepting their different reactions. This thesis focuses on investigating EFL Thailand learners’ perception toward the significance of Intercultural Awareness in EFL teaching at Indonesian universities. This research was quantitative research. The subjects were 50 EFL Thailand learners who studying EFL teaching in Muhammadiyah universities in East Java. Data collection was done by distributing questionnaire to all participants in this reseach. The findings of this research showed that the EFL Thailand learners responded in positive perception about the significance of Intercultural Awareness in EFL teaching at Indonesian universities. They believed Intercultural Awareness has important role in EFL teaching. From the result of this research, the lecturers are suggested to keep to train and teach about the importance of Intercultural Awareness, especially in EFL teaching by giving more explanation and practicing about Intercultural Awarness in real context. For the future researchers who are interested in the same topic, the future reseacher are suggested to find out other perception from different level participants especially in Indonesia such as local or International students or teachers from another country besides Thailand in order to find out more deeply whether difference in certain participants of research can affect the perception toward the significance of Intercultural Awareness in EFL teaching.
