Abstract

This study was conducted to develop the material for English on Junior High School. Observing the phenomena on Junior High School especially on 7 grade SMPM 1 Gresik, reading text with generic structure was the primary stage for students to read. In this primary stage, it was better for teacher to provide the appropriate reading text that motivated students to read. Teacher in this school usually taught English reading by using textbook. The texts form the book were uninterested for the students to read and comprehend the text. There were no pictures and graphs to help them understand the content of the text. It leaded them in difficulty to determine the generic structure and the language features. The school principle has facilitated the students with English laboratory, LCD, VCD player etc. Yet teacher rarely used LCD and other supported media because the material sources in term of video, DVD or flash were limited. Based on those phenomena, the researcher tried to develop the material of procedure text for 7 th grade in term of flash animation. Flash animation is one of the great media to enhance comprehension. This study is a developmental study that adopts Steven J. McGriff’s ADDIE Model integrated with Dewi Aisyah flow chart steps of development. The steps are Need Analysis, Design, development, Expert Validation, Development of Validation, and Try Out, Revision of Material, and Product. The result of the development was flash animation reading procedure text for 7 th grade completed by four text topic, some activities, the vocabulary list and the explanation of procedure and the language features. The researcher composed the material based on the needs then the material validated by the expert. The result showed this material could be apply with some revision. The researcher revised the picture arrangement and some misspelling. The material has been tried out for the students in seventh grade. The result of the average score of tryout was more than 80 on each activity and students felt motivate to study using flash animation. Student could study well and interested with the lesson. In conclusion, this development product can be applied for 7 grade junior high school for reading procedure text. However, this product was still far from perfect and need some improvement. The researcher suggest to teachers and other researchers to take the implementation of this material on classroom action research and develop this material more so this material can be apply on teaching and learning process.
