Abstract
Sociolinguistics concerns with investigating the relationship between language and society with goal being a better understanding of the structure of language and of how language functions in communication. Two parts of sociolinguistics are code switching and code mixing. There are many purposes why people use code switching and code mixing. In studying code switching and code mixing, we can figure out seven purposes of conducting code switching and code mixing. In analyzing the purposes of code switching and code mixing, the writer would find the most triggering of code switching and code mixing. Meanwhile, several factors influence code switching and code mixing. Moreover, we never realize that in our speech or conversation in daily activities, there are code switching and code mixing. That is the way the writer of this the is interested in finding and analyzing about code switching and code mixing in the research class at the 6th students of English Department at Muhammadiyah University of Gresik. In conducting this study, a descriptive qualitative is applied as the research design. It meant that descriptive qualitative emphasized on the process of utterances especially in code switching and code mixing. The study conducted in the research class at the 6th semester students and one lecturer of English Department Muhammadiyah University of Gresik. This study is concentrated on the analyzing the purposes of code switching and code mixing, which are expressing solidarity and intimacy, asserting status, pride and power expressing lexical needs, conveying incompetence, expressing self emotion, making jokes and being more informative. Meanwhile, several factors influence code switching and code mixing are situational, social, cultural and individual reasons. The result of this study shows that there were ten utterances, which consists of the purpose of code switching and code mixing. Those are expressing solidarity and intimacy, asserting status, pride and power, expressing lexical needs, conveying incompetence, expressing self-emotion, making jokes and being informative. From the ten utterances, the most triggering purpose of code switching and code mixing is expressing solidarity and intimacy. It means to share the same idea with the addressee. The writer could also find that there were thirteen utterances, which consist of the factor why people using switch and mix codes that are situational, social, cultural and individual factor.
