Abstract

In this study, the researcher dealt with the implementation of K-W-L technique on reading comprehension. The subjects in this study were the eighth grade students of SMP Muhmmadiyah 8 Benjeng. This study was to investigate, 1. how does K-W-L technique improve the eighth grade students’ reading comprehension ability on narrative text, 2. how are students’ response toward the implementation of K-W-L technique .The criteria of success from this research includs; (1) students’ average score is 65 (passing grade for English lesson), and (2) The students are motivated to join activities on the strategy (70%). The research findings showed that this teaching technique was effective to teach Reading comprehension at the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Benjeng. It was indicated on the students’ average score of post test in cycle 1. The students’ average score in pre test was 56,30. The scores got improvement in post test. The students’ average score in post test was 76,15. The improvement was also shown in the students’ performances when they joined activity in the class. In the first meeting, the percentage of the students’ performances was 31,67%. It increased in the second meeting, 53%. The third meeting was 63,3% and increased significantly in the fourth meeting, 80%. It showed that the implementation of the implementation of K- W-L technique in teaching reading comprehension has significance improvement on students’ reading comprehension such as in their score, participation and motivation. Based on the research findings, it could be concluded that K-W-L technique could improve student’s reading comprehension, because this technique made the students enjoy in reading, so that the students could understand the text and they could answer the questions well. It was proved by the result of the test that the researcher did in this study which showed that the student’s score increased until reaching the passing grade. It meant that this technique could solve classroom problems. Three suggestions are provided in this research. The first, the English teachers are recommended to use K-W-L technique by giving clear explanation and instructions to the students when applying this technique, preparing the learning activity as good as possible, choosing interesting reading topic and giving reward for the active students. The second, the school should provide the facilities that support teaching and learning activity by using this technique. The last, the next researchers who want to conduct a research using K-W-L technique are recommended to conduct this research in the other language features, students’ levels, and language skills.
