Abstract

This research is classroom action research. The purpose of this research is to increase mathematics conceptual understanding of students in class VIII I Junior High School of Mambaus Sholihin in 2015/2016 by using metaphorical thinking approach. The researcher who is a mathematics teacher in class VIII I I Junior High School of Mambaus Sholihin did this research. The subject is students in class VIII I Junior High School of Mambaus Sholihin. The number of the students is 36. The data collection technique used mathematics conceptual understanding observation sheet. The results of this research are (1) The description of learning mathematics by using metaphorical thinking approach that can increase mathematics conceptual understanding of students in class VIII I Junior High School of Mambaus Sholihin is teacher told the learning purpose, aperception, motivation, and learning topic, the students made group based on teacher instruction, each group got worksheet that was contained contextual problem about learning topic, they discussed to identify main concepts by answering questions and making metaphore to illustrate concept in the worksheet with teacher control, each group presented the answers in the class, teacher and students concluded topic learning, teacher gave reward to the best group, and the last teacher told the next learning topic. (2) The average of achieved percentage of mathematics conceptual understanding indicators based on the observation result from cycles 1 to cycles 3 always increased. The percentage of cycles 1 is 69,71%, the percentage of cycles 2 is 71,67%, and the percentage of cycles 3 is 75,83%. All percetages are in good category.
