Speaking is one of four skill that have important for all of human of the world. Its mean that speaking is an activity used to communicate to deliver a massage from an idea with others. In the teaching learning speaking, the students face some problems, which have an error their ideas that they want to speak. The teacher requires the alternative strategy which can be used for teaching learning in speaking idea. Based on previous studies, mind mapping gave the positive effect. Thus, making different with the previous studies, the researcher applied mind mapping for teaching speaking idea in descriptive text. The objective of the study is to find out the significant effect of mind mapping towards student’s idea in speaking descriptive text. The design of this study was quasi experimental design. The researcher choose eleventh grade students of SMA YPI Darussalam Cerme which totally consisted of 42 students. The researcher chose the sample of the study through population sampling. It was divided 21 students of XI-IPA 2 as control group and 21 students of XI-IPA 2 as experimental. The data was collected by using tests; pre-test and post-test about speaking idea in descriptive text. After getting the data, the researcher analyzed the data using SPSS 16.00 and used Independent Sample T-test. The research finding showed that there was a significant difference between experimental group who was taught by using mind mapping strategy and control group who was taught by traditional method. It has proven by the result of sig. (2-tailed) is .001. The sig. (2-tailed) is lower than 0.05 (0.001 < 0.05). So, null hypothesis (Ho) can be rejected. It means that mind mapping strategy significantly effects on students' speaking idea in descriptive text. The researcher concluded that mind mapping strategy give positive effect on students’ idea of speaking. The students were motivated and independent in learning speaking. Therefore, the researcher suggests to the English teacher for implementing of mind mapping strategy as an alternative strategy in English teaching learning process. For further researchers, the researcher hopes that use of mind mapping strategy in other texts and levels to make different with the previous study.
