Abstract

In English there are four skills that should be mastered, there are: listening, speaking, reading and writing. One of the skills that is important to teach is writing because it is not only useful but also helpful to communicate by using written form. In mastering writing skill, the students are not only able to write well but also understand the content of the text type by using some strategies. One of the strategies that can be used for teaching writing is “Guided Writing Strategy”. This strategy can help the students in improving their writing aspects well. This study was to know the significant influence of guided writing in students’ writing ability of procedure text in SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Gresik. The researcher took two classes as the samples of this study, they were X TKR 1 and X TKR 2 which each class consisted of 20 students. The design of this study was quasi experimental design. The data was collected from pre-test and post-test as the instrument. After getting the data, the researcher analyzed the data by using SPSS 16.0 program. Based on the result of data analyses, the research finding showed that there was significant influence in using guided writing strategy toward students’ writing procedure text in machinery program at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Gresik. The researcher found that the sig. (2-tailed) both of groups was 0,000. It was less than the level of significantly 0,05 (0,000 < 0,05). It indicated that “Guided Writing Strategy” significantly influenced in students’ writing procedure text, so the strategy was effective. The researcher concluded that guided writing strategy gave positive effect on students of machinery program in writing procedure text. Students were motivated in learning writing skill. They were more independent in learning writing especially in mastering writing aspects and developing ideas. Therefore, the researcher gives some suggestions. Firstly, English teachers can use guided writing strategy as the alternative way in teaching English especially for writing skill in vocational high school. Secondly, for the students, they are expected to pay attention more and be more active in teaching learning activity in the class. They should learn in writing some text types in order to increase their vocabularies and make them easier to compose a text. The last for the next researchers, they are expected to conduct the research about guided writing strategy in different level, area and skill.
