Abstract

Self-Directed Learning (SDL) is students’ skill in managing, evaluating, and reflecting what the students need in learning. The students need to have SDL in order that they can follow the growth of this era easily. It needs students’ initiative, the students do self-learning without any instruction from the lecturer or others. In this study, the researcher focuses only in students’ SDL on the subject which uses Project-Based Learning (PjBL) as the learning strategy. Here, the researcher wants to know whether there is significant correlation between SDL and students’ achievement through PjBL or not. To know the correlation, the researcher needs to know both students’ SDL and students’ achievement through PjBL. The researcher used Self-Directed Learning Readiness (SDLRS) questionnaire which was developed by Guglielmino (1978) to measure students’ SDL score and students’ SDL level. Then, to know the students’ achievement in PjBL, the researcher asked the score to the lecturer who taught in the class. This quantitative study conducted in “Curriculum and Material Development for ESP” class with 29 participants of 6th semester students in English Education Department at University of Muhammadiyah Gresik. The data was collected from the questionnaire and the accumulation score in “Curriculum and Material Development for ESP” class. After getting both data, the researcher analyzed them by using statistical computation of SPSS 15.00 and used Spearman’s rho correlation as a tool of the measurement. The result of this study showed that SDL and students’ achievement in PjBL were positive and strongly correlated (r=0,548). Meanwhile, the significance value (p-value) was 0,002 so null hypothesis (Ho) could be rejected at 5% level. It means there was significant correlation between SDL and students’ achievement through PjBL. Finally, it could be summed up that there was positively, strongly, and significantly correlation between SDL and students’ achievement in PjBL. Based on the result, SDL could be one of indicator of better achievement. So the students need to enhance their SDL for getting better performance and achievement.
