Abstract

Reading is one of the fundamental part in mastering language. Actually, reading is such language skill of constructing the meaning of the text. In Indonesian education, we use English language as a foreign language. Particularly, in a foreign language situation, a good reading competency is a must. Therefore curricula expend a large number for reading lesson in order to achieve that goal. Also, reading has a big portion in the national exam graduation question. It shows how important the mastery of reading comprehension skills in determining student's graduation. Considering the needs of reading mastery, reading competence should obtain more serious handling. Thus the statement of the problem of this study is the reading test which designed for 7th grade students of junior high school on second semester is a product in the form of reading test that can be used for students to practice their reading ability. As the issue has been stated above that in the English national exam, 75% of the questions that tested to the students are a reading test based. Thus, to pass the exam, students must be able to master reading. Also, as the nature of language itself, to master a language skill, students need to do a lot of practice. One of that way is by doing the reading test. Research design of this study is Research & Development. Subject of this study are the teacher and the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Cerme. In developing this product, the researcher uses the approach of Harris (1969). First step is planning the test. Second is prepearing the test item and direction. Third is reviewing the test. Fourth is pre-testing the test. Fifth is analyzing the item test. Next is try-outing the test. Last is determining the scoring and grading. There are 25 items of multiple choice test and 5 items of essay test. There are many topic included in this reading test such as, table list; asking and stating the nature of people, animals, objects; asking and stating the behavior/action/function of people, animals, objects; instruction, short notice, warning/caution; descriptive text; song. Finally, the researcher hopes that this reading test can be used for teacher in the same level who wants to train their students reading comprehension. For the other researcher, researcher suggested to develop any kind of reading test in the other level into CALL application or MALL application.
