Abstract

This study described about English reading material for narrative using comic strip. in this study, the writer chosen the students of the first grade at Senior High School SEMEN Gresik as a subject because most of the students in this school need interesting material and media in learning English language that can motivate them. The writer limited the subject only for the first grade students at the second semester because the material that exists in comic strip is narrative text. This study is how to develop reading material of narrative using comic strip for the first grade at senior high school students in Gresik. In this study, the writer used research and development (R & D) as a research design. Before developing materials, the writer conducted questionnaire toward 110 students and conducting interview to the English’s teacher to get the data. From the result of questionnaire and interview, the writer got a data that students need. The writer developed reading material using comic strip based on the need analysis and syllabus. The reading material using comic strip consists of four units with three topics. In the first page of comic strip there is a cover, second page is preface, third page is table of content and the next is the opening of lesson or the definition of narrative text, stories, vocabularies and essay questions in the end of each story consist of ten questions related to the text and game activity. Then, in the last of comic strip there is answer key for all of the exercises in each unit and there are references. In conclusion, the students were interested with the comic strip because they were enjoyed reading the story, the story that they read is unfamiliar story, so it can make them courioused and motivated to read. Based on the research findings, suggestion provided to other researchers to use this product as their reference in developing the material especially in reading skill. Other researcher can develop comic strip in other kinds of text such as descriptive text, recount text, news item text, etc but using application in the process of developing, such as; using Photoshop or other application in the process of drawing also coloring pictures in order better than this product. Next, for students, they can improve their reading skill and motivate in the process of learning because it has good appearance.
