Abstract

Indonesian learners of English often find difficulties and make errors in their attempt to use the target language rules, especially in constructing structures of modification in constructing phrase. This study tried to analyze the use of structures of modification. The purposes of this study are to identify and classify types of errors and to figure out the frequency of the error occurrence of structures of modification. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative and quantitative. The population of this study was the students of the 8th grade of SMPN 4 Gresik. Forty students of the total of the population were taken as the sample of this study. To collect the data, the writer used test as the instrument of this study. There were three steps in the process in data analysis. They are identification errors, classification errors, and tabulation. Based on the frequency of the errors, the result of the test showed that there were adjective as noun-modifiers was the most difficult structures of modification for the students. It is 70%. Based on the surface strategy taxonomy, misordering reaches the highest frequency (80%), out of 665 errors. From the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that the students still got difficulties in structures of modification in constructing phrases. It is proven by the frequencies of errors in adjective as noun-modifier (70%) and misordering (80)%. By studying the students’ errors of structures of modification, we could get a clear picture of the students’ knowledge of English structures of modification. It is expected that English teachers should pay more attention to the problem faced by the students. For the students, it is suggested that they can learn from those errors they made.
