Abstract

In this study, the researcher dealt with the implementation of the combination of talking stick and darts game. The subjects in this study were the seventh grade of SMP Muhmmadiyah 8 Benjeng. This study was to investigate, 1. how can the combination of talking stick and darts game improve the seventh grade students’ speaking ability on descriptive text, 2. how are students’ response toward the implementation of the combination of talking stick and darts game.The criteria of success from this research includs; (1) students’ average score is 65 (passing grade for English lesson), and (2) The students are motivated to join activities on the strategy (70%), (3) the students should master speaking skill about 70%. The research findings showed that this teaching aid was effective to teach English at the seventh grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Benjeng. It was indicated on the students’ average score of post test in cycle 1. The students’ average score in pre test from the teacher and teacher partner was 58,6. The scores improved in post test. The students’ average score in post test from the teacher and teacher partner was 80,7. The improvement was also shown in the students’ performances when they joined activity in the class. In the first meeting, the percentage of the students’ performances was 39,2%. It increased in the second meeting, 58,9%. The third meeting was 71,4% and increased significantly in the fourth meeting, 76,8%. It showed that the implementation of the combination of talking stick and darts game in teaching speaking has significance improvement on students’ speaking ability such as in their score, participation and motivation. Based on the research findings, three suggestions are provided. The first, the English teachers are recommended that the combination of talking stick and darts game was a good strategy to teach English to the students. The second, the school should provide the facilities that support teaching technique using the combination of talking stick and darts game. The last, the next researchers who want to conduct a research using the combination of talking stick and darts game are recommended to conduct this research in the other language features, students’ levels, and language skills.
