Abstract

This study was conducted based on the consideration of the problems that the students had in learning writing especially in recount text at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Giri. The researcher found that students’ writing was low. Based on the preliminary study, the researcher found problems in teaching and learning recount writing. The students at 8a class in SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Giri still had low ability in writing and low motivation in learning English. Almost of students’ average writing score were 52, 0. Besides, the class was crowded. Some of the students did not pay attention to writing class and some of them slept when the teacher were explaining the material in the class. Based on the problems that the researcher faced in the classroom, this study was focused on solving the problem related how the students could focus on the lesson and enjoyed the learning well in order they could improve their writing. The research problem here was, “How does the use of task based instruction by using picture series improve the students’ recount writing ability for the second grade at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Giri?” The design of the study was classroom action research. During implementing media in the classroom, the researcher was accompanied by a teacher partner to observe the class. This research was conducted in one cycle which was divided into four main activities; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The research findings showed that task based instruction by using picture series was effective media to teach writing recount text at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Giri. It was indicated on the students’ score of post test in cycle 1. The students’ average result in pre test was 55, 0. Students could past the test well. The scores improved in post test. The students’ average result in post test was 80, 0. The improvement was also shown in the students’ performances in the class. Based on the research findings, two suggestions were provided. The first, the English teachers were recommended that task based instruction by using picture series was a good strategy and media to teach writing recount text for junior high school. The second, the next researchers who wanted to conduct a research using picture series were recommended to conduct this research in different areas, levels, and skills.
