Abstract

Language is the way to communicate among others. Humans use language as a way of signaling identity with one cultural group and different from others. Many natural language words have idiomatic. It is an expression that cannot be understood from the literal meaning of its words. This research aims at observing the idiom of the movie and also the meaning about that. Hence the research question the formulated as follow; (1) what are the kinds of idiom in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"?, (2) and what are the meanings of each idiomatic expressions in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”? This study describes the meaning of idiom in the dialogue of the This study uses descriptive qualitative, the methods of collecting the data in this research are observation by watching the movie. The subject of this study was the dialogue by main charracter, Harry on the movie “Harry Potter and the sorcerer’s Stone”. The finding of this study showed two types of idiom and the meaning related of the movie, there were Lexemic idiom and Phraselogical idiom. Lexemic idiom was dominant in this study. The suggestion of this study for teacher, learner and the next reseacher. Movie media is good to apply to teach English. The movie has many language forms in it. This analysis show one of language forms that can be found in movie, in this study is idiom. Learning English also learn culture of it. The culture aspec is true idiomatic expression, but that is not only idiom, there are many English form in culture need to learned.
