Abstract
Vocabulary is one of important elements in English. Without vocabulary, people will be difficult to communicate to others using English. In education, it is needed to be emphasized that every teacher must realize to use good strategy to increase the learners’ motivation to learn vocabulary mastery. There are so many ways or strategy teacher can use it, but not all can be used. Teacher will use strategy that is appropriate with the problem, usually the problem comes up from the learners. Every problem has different strategies that can be used. Teacher must be creative to make the learning process more effective. One of the strategy is make a match strategy. Make a match strategy is an exciting strategy for the learners who want to learn vocabulary easily. It is done cooperatively, so the cooperation among learners will increase. The writer is interested in using make a match strategy to solve problem in SDM 2 Gresik. The research problem is “How does ‘make a match’ strategy improve vocabulary mastery to the fifth grade learners at SD Muhammadiyah 2 Gresik?” This research design of this study is classroom action research. The objective of this study is to know how “make a match” strategy improves vocabulary mastery. The subject of this study is the fifth grade of SD Muhammadiyah 2 Gresik. The researcher does the action research in four steps, they are: planning, acting, observing and reflecting. To collect the data, the researcher uses some instruments; observation, test, and questinnaire. The researcher uses triangulation to analysis the data. This study is done in one cycle. Based on the result of the data analysis, make a match strategy that is appropriate to be applied in teaching vocabulary. The conclussion was make a match strategy could help the learners memorize vocabulary easier, it was because learners saw not only the name but also the picture, so they would remember new vocabulary. Therefore, make a match strategy could motivate the learners in learning vocabulary, because there were interactions among them. It is important that applying make a match needs good time management, in order the implementation can run well. The teacher should make the learners understand about the procedure of make a match. Make sure that the learners engage to the strategy, it can help them easy to catch the material.
