Abstract

In learning English as foreign language, the first step is the students are able to master many vocabularies. As we know that vocabulary is the basis of listening, speaking, reading and writing skill of English. There are many media that can be used in teaching vocabulary. One of them is using Word chain. An English teacher of the fourth grade at SDN Gulomantung Kebomas Gresik had used word chain in teaching vocabulary started from academic year 2009-2012. This condition gives chance for the writer to describe teaching vocabulary using word chain for EYL. This thesis focuses in teaching English vocabulary using word chain for the fourth grader at SDN Gulomantung Kebomas Gresik. Descriptive qualitative was used as design in this study. The subject of this study was an English teacher and the students of the fourth grader at SDN Gulomantung Kebomas Gresik. Actually, the writer took the data for a month and the instrument of the study is the writer of the research herself by using tools observation checklist, interview guideline, and open ended questionnaire form. The writer analyzed the data by using three steps. Those are data reduction and coding, data display, and conclusion. Based on the result, the teacher used word chain in teaching vocabulary by writing on the black board and matching the word on word chain with the picture that the students had learnt. The teacher had a problem in applying word chain. The problem appeared from the students themselves. It was about personal and social problems of the students. To solve personal problem of the students the teacher became aware and response to the student’s personality or characteristic and convinced them that they could if they wanted to study hard. She also built up students’ confidence, made them care and enjoy the lesson. The conclusion of this thesis is an English teacher of fourth grader at SDN Gulomantung Kebomas Gresik uses word chain in teaching vocabulary by using two teaching techniques. It could be proved by the result of instruments. The writer also wanted to give suggestion for further writer. Because the result of this study can not be generalized to other elementary school, it will be better if this study is continued in the future to see the different of the implementation of word chain in teaching English vocabulary.
