Abstract

Reading is one of the important skills in learning English, because from reading we can get much information from the text. Therefore, reading is the process of constructing meaning from written texts and achieves the goals of comprehension, and vocabulary knowledge. In learning reading, vocabulary mastery and comprehension are very important when we read a text because to comprehend we have to understand the content of the text, both explicit and implicit meaning. Therefore, the writer wants to know the correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension skill. The purpose of this study is to find out the correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension skill. The writer chooses the students of Mts Al-ibrohimi Manyar at VIII grade, in this school the students between female and male are separated. The researcher just takes two classes as the sample, both of male and female students. To measure the students’ ability the writer uses test as an instrument. The result of this analysis indicates that vocabulary mastery connection with reading comprehension skill in Mts Al-ibrohimi Manyar at eight grades has provided optimal results. It is shown from the answers given by students in its instrument of research that most of the students good for answering the question. The research finding showed that: (1) the statistical analysis of vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension skill showed that the p-value is 0,000. The significant level is smaller than 0, 05 it means the null hypothesis (Ho) can be rejected. Based on the result, it could be concluded that there was significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension skill. (2) There is positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension skill. It can be seen from the r-value (Pearson Correlation) that is +0,640. It means the correlation in a positive direction that was variable X and variable Y were straight line, if the value of variable X was higher, variable Y will get higher value as well. (3) Based on the data result, there were high correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension skill. It was showed from the r-value +0,640 > +0,600. For suggestion, vocabulary is basic for learning English. It is very important for the students to master it because it can make the students easier to comprehend text. To be able to master the vocabulary is not enough for the student just remember new vocabulary or memorize it but the frequency in reading will allow them to acquire new vocabulary. The current study concluded that students’ experiences and reading strategies help the students to understand texts but vocabulary mastery was more contributive in helping the students to comprehend the texts. However, increasing the level of vocabulary not only from the students but also teacher must increase their quality of mastering vocabulary.
