Abstract

As international language, English has been learning by all national students, esspecialy in indonesia. The importantce of learning English is in the school esspecially in process learning English in classroom, to build in order to develop independence. People assume that independent learning means that a student needs to work alone. Working alone does not automatically develop independent learning skills in, equally importantly, independent learning can also take place in the classroom (Broady & Kenning, 1996). The purpose of this study is to describe how is independent learning in English classroom, the research was held in SMPN 1 Kasiman with 28 students in VIII-B Class. This study used qualitative study to collect and analys the data, there are questionnaire, intervew, and document .The students give positive responses showed by the students motivated in teachinglearning procces. The result of this study showed that the independent learning were characteristic by some fact that are self-reliant, self making decisions about their learning, self aware of their own learning with the real word, self aware of their strengths and weakneses, self responsiility for their own learning know about different strategies for learning and self intrinsically motivated by making progress in learning. After the conducting this study the researcher would like to give suggestions to the teacher, and the next researcher. For the teacher it is advisable to manage the time well and give extra motivation to the students. Regarding to further research in this field, the next researcher is recommended to conduct the study about independent learning in English classroom in different focus such as different subject or different kinds of text because it will be very interesting for further research.
