Abstract
As international language, English is very important language in this modern era. In presenting English, especially vocabulary, the teacher should be creative in choosing the materials and able to stimulate the students’ interest. The teacher needs to manipulate some strategies to support the teaching and learning process. This study is conducted to find out the information about condition of the English subject, especially in Teaching English vocabulary at MINU Trate Putri Gresik. By knowing the strategies, the teacher may achieve the purpose of teaching learning process at the fifth grade of MINU Trate Putri Gresik. The researcher used descriptive qualitative design to achieve this study. The result of this study indicates that English teacher has to know various strategies of presenting the vocabulary, in order the students can be understand what the teacher expects then to do. The strategies function not only to assist the students to grasp meaning of new the words easily, but also make the variation of teaching in order to avoid the passive class. From those activities, the researcher found that the students kept attention. They enjoyed that activity so much. They did not realize that they were in teaching and learning process, because the class looked more active and attractive, so the students could guess well when the teacher pointed them. The conclusion of this study is that there are many kinds of strategies that can be applied in teaching vocabulary. These are self-defining context, definition, identifying picture, grasping the meaning, and synonym. All strategies can increase the students’ motivate in learning vocabulary. It showed that students’ response is nice and making them exited to learn English. Based on the result of the study, some suggestions are offered to English teacher, English students, and future research. The English teacher especially in teaching vocabulary must be more creative in improving and modifying their strategies of teaching. The future researchers, in the same field of the study, may use as reference to start further investigation. Replication studies with larger sample are preferable to serve as comparison.
