Abstract

This research took place based on English learning in SMP Maa’rif NU Benjeng shows the one of the serious problems is the difficulty in speaking English. It is because most of the students seldom practice speaking. Actually they know how to speak well but, they have no motivation to increase their speaking abilities. Mostly, the students feel afraid of making mistakes, nervous, and shy to express their ideas in spoken form and they do not have self-confidence to speak English. So thats why the researcher gives a method in other hand the students can speak confidence that is experimental and control group. This is an experimental research that was aimed to find out the effect of using describing pictures as a media on students’ speaking ability at the eighth of SMP Maa’rif NU Benjeng. The researcher takes 60 students as data sample in this research. Researcher divided the two groups, class VIII–A as experimental group consisted of 30 students, and class VIII-B as the control group consisted of 30 students. The data is taken from pre test and post-test in experimental group and control group. While in control group recived traditional teaching. In the experimental group, the researcher gave treatment by using describing pictures as a media. After getting the data, researcher analyzes the result using SPSS 16.0. The data analysis was attempted using t-Test for two group design. The average students initial tests between the experimental group and control group was 52.03 and 53.8. The score increases on the final results of the test. The average students in the final results of the test between the experimental group and control group was 74.76 and 69.36. The result showed that the significance less than  (0,05) level or (0.001< 0,05). It means that the null hypothesis should be rejected and there was a significant influence on the use of inquiry based learning on students speaking ability between the experimental group and control group.The researcher concluded that the use of describing picture as a media as more effective than the traditional teaching towards stundents speaking ability.
