Abstract

Speaking is a very important to learn in second language learning. Making stud ents be motivated in learning speaking is one of the way needed by teacher. That is why this research will focus on techniques of teaching speaking and what are the problems faced by the teacher. This research is conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Giri Gresik . This research used Descriptive Qualitative design with two tools of instruments; Observation and Interview. All the data had been recorded by using video which will support the analysis of the result. The result showed that there were some techniques which were used in the implementation. They are drilling, pair work, describe and identify technique. The teacher used drilling technique in order to make the students were easy to memorize the vocabularies. Besides, he also used pairwork, it had a good impact to students’speaking. They could speak fluently. Moreover, the teacher used describe and identify technique, it was aimed at making students active in speaking. The teacher also gave some activities such as jokes, giving feedback, giving a task that also made the students’ more interest to learn English. The teacher also faced some problems while teaching: 1) Limited time for teaching 2) Lack of Facilities in the class, and 3) Less of the media used. Teacher should know the ability of their students to decide appropiate techniques suitable situation and condition. Headmaster also plays an important role in order to support media device for learning process. The researcher gives suggestion for the futher researcher to analyzes about the techniques of teaching English in all skills of English subject in order to become knowledge reading materials for other researchers.
