Abstract

Preposition is one of part of speeches that has function to make up a sentence to have the correct utterance. Therefore, the role of preposition can not be avoided in sentence construction. Moreover, the use of inappropriate preposition in sentence comes up to miss understanding of meaning. The purpose of this study is to analyze the students' error in using preposition, in which the students still had difficulty to differentiate the use of prepositions in constructing a sentence. This study is concerned to analyze the students' error in using preposition, those are: preposition of place, preposition of time, preposition of direction, preposition of manner, preposition of agent/instrument, preposition of accompaniment, preposition of purpose, preposition of association, preposition of measure, preposition of similarity, and preposition of in the capacity . The subjects of this study are the students who joined in writing 2 class of English Department Students at Muhammadiyah University of Gresik. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative, in which the data is using quantitative and qualitative data, and the goal is to generate a theory. The instrument is documentation; the document were taken from the students’ paragraph in middle and final examination The result of this study showed that many errors of preposition occurred in the students' paragraph, those were; preposition of place was 28.4%, preposition of time was 6%, preposition of direction was 15.5%, preposition of manner was 6%, preposition of agent/instrument was 3.4%, preposition of accompaniment was 7.8%, preposition of purpose was 17.2%, preposition of association was 10.3% and preposition of in the capacity of was 5.1%. It was shown that the most error occurred in students’ paragraphs’ writing was preposition of place. It occurred because students still has difficulties in differentiating the use of preposition of place ‘in’, ‘on’ and ‘at’.
