Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the significant influence of SWELL (Social-interactive Writing for English Language Learners) in writing for the tenth grade students of SMA Nahdlatul Ulama 2 Gresik. The design of this study is quasi experiment with non randomized pre-test and post-test. In order to know the effect of SWELL, the researcher carried out the experiment at SMA Nahdlatul Ulama 2 Gresik from May 25th 2012 to June 20th 2012. The researcher took 48 students as the sample. The class of X-B consists of 24 students as an experiment class and the class of X-C consists of 24 students as a control class. The instrument used to collect the data is writing test to get scores of students writing mastery. After pre-test was given, the treatment was conducted in six meetings, then the researcher held post-test to get the research data. Having got research data, researcher analyzed the data by SPSS14.0 program. Based on the result of data analysis, the research findings showed that there was a significant difference between the students writing mastery who was taught by using SWELL method and who was taught without SWELL method. The value of significant level is 0.000 under the 0.05 level of significance. Based on these research findings, it can be concluded that SWELL method has significant influence in writing narrative at tenth grade students of SMA Nahdlatul Ulama 2 Gresik 2011/2012.
