Abstract

Paraphrasing is a method which demands the readers to comprehend the content of the text which they read. It closes to main idea because they must be able to figure the main idea of the text out. Then, they can express their comprehension by using their own words. This thesis, was aimed to know the implementation teaching reading narrative through paraphrase and students’ responses in the classroom. Then, the researcher chooses the student of SMP Islam Duduk Sampeyan at 8th grade. In addition, the researcher used to observation and interview as the instrument in this study. This research is a descriptive study. Observation and interview were used to collect the data. From the data, the researcher made description to answer the research questions. The interviewed was to know the students’ responses toward the method of paraphrasing in narrative text. The result of this study found out that there explanation of paraphrasing teaching methods used by the teacher very detail and clearly. There were hands-on experiences, inquiry, discovery, cooperative learning. The result of students’ responses toward the teaching reading narrative comprehension through paraphrase at SMP Islam Duduk Sampeyan was very positive responses. The conclusion of this method is paraphrase made student feel easy to learn narrative text and could build their ideas based on the text that teacher gave the student. This method could help them organize their ideas by giving them a worksheet related narrative text. The students could learn some points by following a few steps which were implements by teacher. The teacher applied paraphrase quite clear. The students could read and responded to the teacher’s explanation related to understand paraphrase. The researcher gave some suggestions in order to be useful in improving the teacher creativity in teaching science using English. For the teacher should give the student warm up activities before teach the materials, for the students who are low ability should bring dictionary in teaching and learning process, and for the next researchers It will be better if this research is continued in the future to see the effectiveness of the method applied by the teacher.
