Abstract

Speaking is one part of four skills that have to be mastered by the students. Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves producing, receiving and processing information. The aim of this research was to know the effect of task based group activities in EYL speaking classes. The design of this research was experiment. From 3 classes as the population and the researcher chooses 2 classes as the sample for this research. One class as experimental group and each other as control group. Before the researcher applied task based group activities, the researcher checking the content validity. After that, applied pre-test and post test at the beginning and the final process. The test was speaking test the topic are transportation and public places. After applied the pre-test, the researcher give treatment four times in experimental group. The treatment was about task based group activities. After the researcher applied this method, the next step was give the students post test. The result showed that the null hypothesis should be rejected and the statistical test that there is significant effect between the students who taught with task-based group activities and the students who taught without task-based group activities in EYL speaking class. The research finding showed that task based group activities give positive effect to teach speaking in EYL. It was indicated on the students’ average score of post test. The average score of post test in experimental group was 79,86 and average score of post test in control group was 75,31. It was shown that the the assignment score of the students was advance than before. So it can improvement that the students were has motivation in teaching learning process. Based on this research, the researcher gives some suggestion. The first is for English teacher. English teacher should increase frequency of using task based group activities in teaching speaking to improve the students’ speaking ability. The second is for the students. The students should do more exercise with perform in front of the class in order their more comfortable if the students in speaking class. The third is for the other researcher. The researcher hopes that this study can hold up the previous study and may be used as consideration for teaching and learning process in the future.
